Bali is famous for its pristine beaches its great hospitality and its volcanic mountains , but there is one more thing which should be on your itinerary when you plan a visit to this beautiful island. The Buddhist temples of Bali, bali has an estimated 10,000 temples but there are few which will certainly feature in anyone’s list of the  tourist places  in bali let’s have a look at a few of them.

Brahmavihara-Arama



The Brahmavihara-Arama is  located in the hills of Banjar near to  the Banjar hot springs which are just 1.5 km away. It is also the largest Buddhist  monastery  of bali. Its main attraction is a replica of world’s largest Buddhist site of Borobudur. It was opened around 50 years back in 1970 and has an old world charm to it. It has numerous meditation rooms, gardens and libraries where you can indulge yourself in Buddhist literature. Brahmavihara-arama is located just 20 kms from the singaraja town and is 10 km from the beach resort of Lovina. This temple features on every temple lover’s places to visit in bali list.

This Buddhist monastery is a bit different in its architecture as it features a Balinese style metal bell in the Balinese style bell tower instead of the more traditional wooden kul-kul normally seen in Buddhist monasteries. When you enter the front office you will find souvenirs  to take back home like t-shirts  Buddhist calendars and posters which can be taken in exchange for a donation.  The name of this monastery consists of three  words brahma , vihara and arama which when combined give the meaning of a place for self cultivation. There are many main sections but the one which must be visited is the Uposatha Gara which is in the western section of the premises. Its walls contain pictures of Gautam buddha’s birth and a statue which shows budhha in his nirvana state. This is the very room in which a new monk is initiated into the Buddhist religion.

Vihara Dharmyana  Kuta



This is a Chinese Buddhist temple and was visited by Dalai lama himself. The temple is located near Kuta’s coastal strip and can be identified by its characteristic murals and bright red walls. 

The history of this temple dates back to 1876 although pretty old this temple is well maintained by its resident monks most of whom are of Chinese descent. As you enter the temple you are greeted with sweet smell of incense sticks. This temple consists of Baktisala which is the main structure consisting of large round lanterns hanging from the edges of the roof which in turn is supported by giant pillars which are wrapped by dragons like a serpent wraps a sandalwood tree. There is a banyan tree under which is the four faced Buddha , it has a small moat which has turtles swimming in it. Your are supposed to maintain the decorum of the place by wearing appropriate clothing.

The satya dharma temple




This is another Buddhist temple worth seeing, it covers a sprawling 8000 square meter near the port of Benoa. The temple is dedicated to Ma cho- the god of the seas it is famous amongst the sailors and thousands of Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese , Thai and Taiwanese sailors throng this place to seek blessings of Ma cho. The décor of this place was imported from China.


Vihara Dharma Giri



This is another beautiful Buddhist temple located in tabanan, west bali. The major attraction of this temple is a 10 metre large statue of white sleeping Buddha. You are expected to wear modest attire , shorts are not allowed and sarong (scarf) is provided to those who have not brought their own sarong. 

The sleeping Buddha statue has a background of greenery of the yard which gives it a majestic feeling. There is also another sitting Buddha statue which is bright gold in colour, this Buddha is located in the main building which also serves as a prayer hall. The temple is a two hour drive from Kuta vihara.
